We were given the task of re-imagining the sound design for a clip from The Aviator directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. This sequence was particularly interesting as it traverses between three different locations in one sequence and has the repetitive voice of the protagonist. This gave us the freedom of deciding what kind of ambient sound we needed to add to each one of these locations as well as meticulously rehearse our ability to lip-sink British accent with American!
The original sound scape uses music and dramatic reverb on leonardo’s voice to create the Hollywood Drama. As an alternative we decided to remove the clip from its context and give it a new meaning. DiCaprio in our film is an Alien being sent back to his planet from earth. This allowed us to use the location, the hanger room of an airport as a space control room and use science fiction effects to re-create the environment.
